Her verdict: they’re all good in their own way, but the right choice depends on budget, bag size, and how much attention you want to draw to yourself.

The premium contenders: Dyson HushJet and Shark ChillPill
The Dyson HushJet ($99) is the most powerful handheld fan Silberling tested, which comes as no surprise from a company known for vacuums and hair dryers. At about 7 inches tall, it’s the tallest and heaviest device in the comparison — it fits in most purses but won’t slip into a pocket. The package includes a travel bag, a desktop stand, a neck lanyard, and a USB-C charger, and the five power settings allow for quieter operation at lower speeds.
The neck lanyard is a notable feature for hands-free carrying, though Silberling notes it doesn’t actually direct airflow at your face while worn — you still need to pick the fan up to aim it. The HushJet’s power comes with some audible noise, but the lower settings mitigate that.

It includes a flashlight and a USB port for charging your phone, though both features are basic. The fan is the weakest of the four tested, and the flip-open design can be slightly annoying. But it has little bear ears, which — as Silberling points out — Dyson doesn’t offer.
The surprise winner of the comparison is a $15 MACMORE fan from Amazon. The listing shows obvious signs of a drop-shipping operation — the product images look heavily edited, and the company only sells two items on the platform. But the fan itself is excellent: at 4 inches tall, it’s the smallest and lightest option, fits in a pocket, and includes a removable clip for attaching to a shirt or bag strap.
Silberling found herself reaching for the MACMORE fan most often despite having over $250 worth of review units at home. She even bedazzled it. It’s not as powerful as the premium fans, but it’s quiet enough for public use and takes up less space in a purse than a set of keys.
What the price difference actually buys you
The gap between a $15 fan and a $149 fan comes down to three things: power, durability, and features. The Dyson and Shark options deliver noticeably stronger airflow and feel more substantial in hand. The Shark’s attachments and the Dyson’s desktop stand add genuine versatility. But for most people, the question is whether those upgrades justify a 7–10x price increase.
For context, the handheld fan market has grown alongside rising global temperatures. If you want versatility for outdoor events, the Shark ChillPill’s mister and cooling plate are genuinely useful. Silberling’s final assessment is pragmatic: “This all comes down to personal preference. I’m optimizing for discretion, but maybe you’ll choose to optimize for a fan with the most features or that has little bear ears on it.”
