Snapchat is rolling out a new feature called “Now Playing” that lets users share the music they are listening to in real time directly on Snap Map, the company exclusively told TechCrunch. Starting with Spotify integration, the feature displays a user’s current track on the map for friends to see, adding a social layer to music discovery.
How Now Playing Works
To use the feature, Snapchatters link their Spotify account within the app. Once connected, the song currently playing appears on their Snap Map Bitmoji. Friends can tap on the track to listen to a preview or save it to their own Spotify library. The feature also extends to Spotlight videos: users can save any song they discover in a Spotlight clip directly to Spotify, or visit the track’s page on the platform.
Privacy is a central element. Users can choose who sees their listening activity—friends, custom groups, or only themselves. Sharing remains active as long as the user has opened Snapchat within the past 24 hours. After 24 hours of inactivity, sharing pauses automatically and resumes only when the app is reopened. Users can also manually pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely. The feature does not display a user’s last-played song or listening history, focusing only on real-time activity.
Why This Matters for Social Music Discovery
Snapchat’s move comes as social platforms increasingly compete to integrate music sharing. TikTok has long driven viral music trends, allowing users to share songs from streaming services and save tracks they encounter. Instagram lets users share what they’re listening to through Notes, the short status updates at the top of DMs. Even Spotify itself has introduced real-time friend-sharing features.

“Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer,” Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, said in a statement. “Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”
Snap Map already has over 450 million monthly users, according to Snapchat. Launched in 2017 as a way to see friends’ locations and public Snaps, the map has expanded to include local hotspots, events, and now music discovery. The new feature is rolling out to users in regions where both Spotify and Snapchat are available, with Canada expected to follow soon.
What This Means for Users and the Industry
For everyday users, Now Playing turns Snap Map into a passive music discovery engine—no need to manually post what you’re listening to. It also gives Spotify a new distribution channel for song discovery, potentially driving streams from within a social app. For Snapchat, the feature deepens engagement by making the map more dynamic and personal, encouraging users to check in more frequently.
The integration reflects a broader trend: social platforms are becoming music discovery hubs, blurring the line between streaming and social interaction. As these features evolve, user privacy and control will remain critical. Snapchat’s approach—limiting sharing to real-time only, with clear pause options—may set a standard for how social music features balance expression with privacy.
