Frequently asked questions
What is FII and DII data?
It is the value of shares bought and sold in a day by two groups of investors: foreign portfolio investors (FII/FPI) and domestic institutions (DII). The net figure is purchases minus sales. A positive net number means the group put money into Indian shares that day; a negative number means it took money out.
When is FII DII data released?
NSE publishes provisional figures for the cash market in the evening after the market closes, usually between 5 pm and 7 pm IST. This page checks for new figures every hour.
Why do FII and DII flows often move in opposite directions?
When foreign investors sell, domestic institutions with steady inflows, for example from monthly mutual fund SIPs, are often on the other side buying. The table above shows how the two groups have traded on each recorded day.
Are the provisional figures final?
No. NSE’s numbers are provisional and cover the cash segment of the exchanges. Final FPI figures are reported later by the depositories (NSDL and CDSL) and can differ slightly.
Does FII selling mean the market will fall?
Not necessarily. Flows describe what large investors did on a given day; on their own they do not predict where prices will go next.
