Frequently asked questions
What is the Nifty P/E ratio?
It is the combined market value of the companies in the Nifty 50 divided by their combined earnings over the last twelve months, as calculated by NSE. A P/E of 20 means investors are paying ₹20 for every ₹1 of yearly profit.
What is the earnings yield?
The earnings yield is the P/E turned upside down: 100 divided by the P/E. It shows earnings as a percentage of the price and is often compared with bond yields.
What do P/B and dividend yield show?
The price-to-book ratio compares the index’s market value with the book value (net assets) of its companies. The dividend yield is the dividends paid over the last year as a percentage of the index level.
Is a high P/E bad?
A high P/E means investors are paying more for each rupee of current earnings, usually because they expect profits to grow. It does not tell you on its own whether the market will rise or fall. Compare it with the index’s own history and with earnings growth.
How often is this page updated?
Every hour on trading days, using NSE’s published index data. Figures during market hours change with prices; the closing figures are kept in the daily history table.
