Elon Musk said on Monday that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America next year, a promise he framed as the start of a larger distribution. “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote in a post on X, according to Foxbusiness.

The SpaceX chief executive did not explain how the shares would be delivered or held, or which age group would qualify. Cnbc reported that Musk made the statement without further details and that the outlet had contacted SpaceX for comment, while Coincentral noted that the X post remains the only public statement on the plan. Coincentral timed the post at just before 4 a.m. ET.

Key facts

  • Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, rising to 6.4 billion including unvested awards and stock options, a 48.4% beneficial stake, per an August SEC filing cited by Cnbc.
  • Cnbc put the cost of the giveaway at about $10.5 billion, using 72 million U.S. children under 18 as of July 1, 2025, and SpaceX’s $146.03 closing price on Friday.
  • The pledge came after Anthropic said it would commit 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, with the stake potentially growing as the company’s value rises.
  • SpaceX stock was priced at $147.49 in premarket trading on Monday, up $1.46, after closing Friday at $146.03, down $2.59, Coincentral reported.
  • SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell has pledged more than $320 million in SpaceX stock to fund Trump Accounts for over two million children, per Coincentral.

Anthropic’s fund set the exchange in motion

On Sunday, Anthropic outlined plans for the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned entity that would start with 5% of its shares. In a post on X, the company said it could add up to 2% for every 50% increase in value over a set baseline, at its board’s discretion, bringing roughly 20% of its shares into public benefit commitments. Anthropic added that its co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of their equity and that about half of its employees are donating a portion of their equity through a matching program.

Musk responded to that post by recommending that Anthropic give the shares directly to the public, then said that is what he would do. His pledge to American children followed a day later. The two outlets differ slightly on the scale of the recipient pool: Cnbc cited the 72 million figure from official census data, while Coincentral noted that other reports place the number at about 73 million.

Why it matters

If carried out in full, the giveaway would dwarf the record gift Michael Dell made to fund Trump Accounts, according to Coincentral, and would hand a stake in a closely watched space company to a population with no say in how it is governed. For Musk, the cost is modest relative to his holding. The unanswered questions — who counts as a kid, how shares would be held, and what “first of many” refers to — determine whether the pledge becomes a functioning distribution program or a statement of intent.

What to watch

The specifics Musk has yet to supply: the age cutoff, the delivery and custody mechanism, and a timeline beyond “next year.” SpaceX has not commented, and any structural detail would likely surface through the company or a further post from Musk.

Nothing here constitutes financial advice, and SpaceX’s share price can move sharply in either direction.
