Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reported a record third-quarter net profit of NT$763.1 billion, about $23.6 billion, up 68.7% from a year earlier, according to Cnbc. The result, announced on October 15, 2026, beat analyst estimates and marked a sixth consecutive quarter of record profit for the world’s largest contract chipmaker.

Cnbc reported the company’s operating margin reached 58.7%, above the top of its own guidance range of 58%. Cryptobriefing reported that management lifted its full-year 2026 revenue growth outlook to about 44% in US dollar terms, up from a prior forecast of growth slightly above 40%.

Key facts

  • Q3 operating margin came in at 58.7%, above the upper end of TSMC’s 58% guidance range.
  • Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion, which Cryptobriefing said implies 55% to 61% year-over-year growth.
  • 2026 capital expenditure guidance held at $60 billion to $64 billion; TSMC also said 2026-2028 capex will be significantly higher than in the previous three years.
  • Advanced technologies of 7-nanometer and below made up 79% of total wafer revenue, with 3-nanometer chips the single largest share at 33%.
  • Second Arizona fab construction is complete and equipment installation is underway, with mass production targeted for the third quarter of 2027.

Demand outpaces supply

Results and guidance pointed to the same imbalance: customers want more advanced chips than TSMC can currently produce. TSMC said demand for AI chips remains strong, driven by the growing adoption of agentic AI and open-source AI models, and pointed to rising demand for AI accelerators used in agentic AI applications and networking.

Sravan Kundojjala, an analyst at SemiAnalysis, told Cnbc that the results reflect demand outpacing production capacity, and that TSMC is assessing whether customers have the financing and supporting components needed to deploy AI systems. He said that even after those checks, TSMC says demand remains well above its supply capacity.

By platform, high-performance computing took 68% of revenue, smartphones 21%. Automotive was the fastest-growing segment quarter on quarter, at 23%. Free cash flow climbed to NT$476.56 billion from NT$139.38 billion a year earlier, and the board approved an NT$7.00 cash dividend for the second quarter.

The two reports differ on the growth framing. Cnbc described Q4 guidance as a 14% sequential increase and a 58% jump year over year at the midpoint. Cryptobriefing reported implied year-over-year growth of roughly 55% to 61%. Cryptobriefing also cited CEO C.C. Wei calling demand extremely robust, a detail not in Cnbc’s report.

Why it matters

TSMC manufactures chips for other companies rather than designing its own, which leaves it exposed to the entire advanced-computing supply chain on both sides. Cryptobriefing reported its market capitalization sits near $2 trillion, roughly double that of rival Samsung Electronics, and that the stock had climbed nearly 60% in 2026. The higher full-year outlook is a signal that the AI buildout has not translated into weaker orders yet.

The caveat is consumer exposure. TSMC flagged macroeconomic uncertainty shaping its 2027 planning and singled out smartphones and other everyday electronics as the parts of the business most sensitive to weaker household spending.

What to watch

The next checkpoints are whether fourth-quarter revenue lands within the $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion range, how 2027 capex plans take shape during planning, and whether consumer-facing demand holds up alongside the AI segment. TSMC’s second Arizona fab is also on the clock, with mass production scheduled for the third quarter of 2027, slightly ahead of its earlier schedule.
